Many governments find themselves facing a perfect storm: smaller budgets, less staff, higher citizen expectations, retiring baby boomers, legacy systems, and broken processes…shall I go on?
Not long ago, The Economist featured a Special Report on innovation in emerging markets. It discussed how companies in the emerging markets, especially India and China, are forging ahead faster and smarter than the rest of us here in the so-called rich countries.

Citizens continue to demand more transparency from government. They want instant and regular access to what decisions are being made and how they are being reached. Social media can be a great tool to engage citizens, but it requires thoughtful planning to do it right. A recent Pew Research Center report highlights trends in the past year indicating that citizens are increasingly connecting with government through social media:
- 5% of internet users followed or became a fan of a government agency or official on a social networking site (9% of all social networking site users)
- 2% of internet users followed a government agency or official on Twitter (7% of all Twitter users)
- 13% of internet users read the blog of a government agency or official
As a local or state government agency, success comes down to approach and technique. In October 2009, when I worked for Jefferson County, we took the initiative to open up to Facebook and Twitter. Before doing so, considerable discussion and assessment of how to implement such an effort occurred. While it seems straightforward to put checks in place, often the energy and desire to get out there can overwhelm the finer details of what should occur.

It's been some time since my last post. I have to take full responsibility for that. I became a father for the first time. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes, Siena Mukhi is doing just fine.
Surprisingly, parenthood has led me to think a lot about how we implement projects and what happens after Go-Live (an unconventional analogy, I know, but then again I’m not sleeping much these days).

First off, hello and thanks for taking the time to read this blog. I hope you’ll find what I have to share interesting and I’m looking forward to hearing your comments and thoughts as well. I’m excited to have this new forum to continue the discussions I’ve had the pleasure of starting with many of you in person.
So, last month, the White House hosted a Forum on Modernizing Government. The forum brought together more than 50 private sector CEO’s and senior members of the Obama Administration to look at how governments can better use technology to save money, improve performance and close the technology gap between the private and public sectors.

Welcome to CSDC’s new corporate blog. Those of you who have been visiting our site for a little while know that 2009 was a year of change. We completely redesigned this site to make it more user friendly and to give us a platform to easily and frequently interact with our clients and the industry.
This brings us to this blog. Many of you have had the opportunity to meet with Nitish Mukhi, our Vice-President Business Development. He has the good fortune to spend most of his time visiting and speaking with many of the leading government agencies all over North America. This gives Nitish a great opportunity to see first hand what challenges our customers are facing, how emerging social and technology trends are impacting their business, and what leading communities are doing to better serve their citizens.
