Why is the public sector embracing the cloud?

18 October 2016,

Implementing AMANDA Case Management Platform in the cloud for our public sector clients has given CSDC a unique insight into their experience.

Why is the public sector embracing the cloud?

Here are 10 benefits of cloud deployments.

  1. Manage it, or outsource it.
AMANDA Cloud consumers use the platform upon which applications can be quickly developed and deployed. A private Cloud is operated only for your organization. Managed by you, or by CSDC Systems and its partners.
  2. Save on Capex.
Access off-site IT resources in a data center that's rented. No need to buy the servers and storage. This way you avoid Capital Expenditure on your investments.
  3. Deploy rapidly. Update continuously.
We assemble and manage stacks of databases, web servers, operating systems, storage, and networking. This means you can focus on deploying your business applications rapidly and benefit from continuously updated and managed infrastructure.
  4. Go Green. Avoid duplicate investments.
To achieve economies of scale, multiple government departments can be deployed on the same physical machines. AMANDA Cloud supports muti-agency and multi-tenancy deployments. This makes for greener IT and you avoid duplicate investments.
  5. Enjoy elasticity and scalability.
Use resources only when needed. This includes processors, memory, network, bandwidth, and storage. The result is you enjoy elasticity and scalability.
  6. Be agile. Respond faster.
You can configure and expand your Platform extremely quickly, simplify and streamline your processes for expansion, and of course develop new apps and transaction types with ease. This helps you become agile, save on precious resources and respond to demands faster.
  7. Enable stakeholder access over the web.
Access to AMANDA 7 hosted data and resources is enabled through a browser. This simply means that all stakeholders can get relevant access with ease.
  8. Be Mobile Friendly.
AMANDA Platform's Mobile ecosystem has 4 cross-platform apps for officials, inspectors, contractors, and citizens. A Cloud deployment makes enabling these smartphone and tablet applications become easy.
  9. Enjoy Savings.
According to one estimate, the US Federal Government saved $3.6 bn after data center consolidation, opting for new technologies and moving to the cloud.
  10. Enhance the Technical Skills of Your Staff.
Your staff is freed from mundane stuff such as monitoring, building, supporting, and troubleshooting servers. As a result, your staff gets additional time for new skill sets and certifications to support a cloud solution and solve business needs. This is one of the bonuses of a Cloud deployment.

What has been the experience of US States on the Cloud?

A study by Brookings, on published in January 2015, shows these findings:

  1. While in the private sector cloud computing has become ubiquitous, the public sector lags behind in the adoption of new technologies
  2. Based on Brooking's content analysis, a number of states are either embarking on or studying, cloud computing
  3. All the states considering cloud computing are taking a balanced and thoughtful approach
  4. Colorado has put security on priority and set a target of improving it by 10% by the end of FY 2015
  5. South Carolina and Connecticut too emphasized cloud security as being important

in a report suggests that

  • The more governments become familiar with the cloud, the greater is the adoption rate. The journey to the cloud by most government agencies starts slow, with functions such as email or office productivity software. And as they get comfortable with the cloud, it leads to more critical applications being implemented.
  • Accreditations such as FedRAMP are increasing the demand. More and more key government agencies are giving the nod to the cloud in the form of certifying the data security processes of certain leading providers. For example, the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) reviews and certifies cloud providers and applications for government use.
  • The desire to provide better citizen services is a key driver. Many State and Local Governments want to improve their efficiency to better manage inspections. New cloud-driven mobile and internet application streamlines scheduling, greatly improving the experience for citizens and businesses.

How have counties and cities, fared in cloud computing?

displaying the results of a 2015 Survey that honors the most Innovative and pioneering Digital Counties.
